Notice regarding OIG Compliance for Third-Party Medical Billing Companies
As a result of the ease of transfer of private information over the internet, Congress adopted Privacy legislation to protect your personal information. This legislation is called HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). The implementation of HIPAA created many questions for industries that provided health-related information. The result for the medical billing industry was the creation of a set of guidelines to suggest how we maintain and process your individual information. The guidelines are called OIG Compliance Program Guidance for Third-Party Medical Billing Companies. OIG stands for the Office of Inspector General, which is a federal agency. The purpose of the program is to assure timely, accurate advice to health care professionals regarding billing issues, and to combat health care fraud and abuse.
There are seven elements for an effective compliance program. They are:
- Implementing written policies, procedures and standards of conduct;
- Designating a compliance officer and compliance committee;
- Conducting effective training and education;
- Developing effective lines of communication;
- Enforcing standards through well publicized disciplinary guidelines;
- Conducting internal monitoring and auditing; and
- Responding promptly to detected offenses and developing corrective action.
Diablo Medical Billing prides itself on fully complying with the elements above in accordance with the OIG Guidelines. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call our contact regarding this program:
